Week 9: First Coast 27, Raines 7 (Oct. 25)

JACKSONVILLE-Only ahead seven points at the half, First Coast was looking for some sort of spark in the second half.

Unfortunately that jolt of energy came at the expense of teammate senior tailback Cameron Price.

While warming up minutes before the start of the second half, Price began complaining of chest pains and fell to the ground in the end zone.

With his parents and teammates looking on, within minutes Price was transported to Shands Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition with a heart arithma. The 20 minute delayed the start of the second half.

The unfortunate chain of events seemed to rally the Bucs, who outscored Raines 13-0 in the second half to knock off their rivals 27-7 at the Shipyard.

Sophomore quarterback DeAndre Johnson started the game with four consecutive incompletions before rattling off eight in a row to end the first half 8 of 12 for 92 yards.

Johnson’s 40-yard pass to a diving senior tight end Deral Burress just inside the left end zone on the Bucs second possession of the third quarter gave the Bucs a 21-7 lead.

Raines, which committed its fifth turnover in two weeks and third of the game, fumbled the ensuing kickoff recovered by Eric Martin giving the Bucs the ball at the 26-yard line with four minutes left in the third.

Six plays later, Johnson scrambled 22 yards weaving around defenders untouched for a 27-7 lead in the closing minute of the third quarter.

Raines, which began the season with six consecutive wins, has dropped its last two games thanks in part to six turnovers, which has resulted in 35 points given up.

First Coast took advantage of three of the four Vikings turnovers, scoring 20 of its 27 points off them.

Quite opposite of the first half, which saw the Vikings take advantage of a rare Bucs turnover.

A high snap over Johnson head on a punt on the Bucs opening possession of the game, gave the Vikings the ball at the 26-yard line.

Junior quarterback Marvin Zanders (8 of 22 for 214 yards) connected with Carlos Tarrats for a 26-yard gain and took a 13 yard sack to nearly put the Vikings out of scoring position.

Zanders’ 18-yard screen pass to tailback Alex Gardner a play later gave the Vikings an early 7-0 lead four minutes into the game.

A possession later, the Vikings appeared to be headed towards another score driving inside the ten yard line, however Zanders under threw a pass near the end zone and Bucs defensive back Dorian Killings picked it off at the 3-yard line.

Johnson (13 of 20 for 208 yards) drove his team 97 yards on 14 plays, completing all six of his passes on the drive, resulting in a 19-yard pass to Kennard Bright in the left corner tying the game at 7-7 with 7:47 left in the first quarter.

While the offense started to click, the defense led by Daniel McMillian, Seyvon Lowry, Darius Whitty and Raynard Brown harassed the Vikings offense throughout the game. The foursome held the Vikings ground game featuring Alex Gardner (14 yards on 9 carries) to 19 total yards.

Five plays after the score, tailback Keith Stallings fumbled for the second straight week at a critical time, this time after taking a few steps following the handoff.

Linebacker Terron Goodman picked up the loose ball and ran 62 yards down the sideline untouched for a score and a 14-7 lead with under six minutes left in the first half.

The play seemed to be the beginning of the end for the Vikings and the possible spark the Bucs needed.

The Vikings offense which had averaged nearly 35 points a game, has self destructed the last two weeks, being held to 21 and 7 points respectively albeit to two solid teams Bolles and First Coast.

First Coast (8-0), which has won 28 regular season games in a row, hosts Ed White next week with the District 2-7A title on the line; while Raines (6-2) hosts arch-rival Ribault next Saturday at 2 p.m. with the District 3-4A runner-up spot on the line.

Week 8: Player of the Week

Offense
Dexter Carter Jr. (Bolles): With star wide receiver Austin Kirksey sidelined with a separated shoulder, Bolles needed someone else to step up and fill his shoes.

That someone ended up being Dexter Carter Jr., son of former NFL great Dexter Carter Sr.

Carter (6 catches for 132 yards) stepped up huge for the host Bulldogs in the 24-21 District 3-4A win over visiting Raines at Hodges Field.

Facing third and goal from the five with nine seconds left, quarterback Colby Peters hit Carter on an inside slant pass in the end zone giving the Bulldogs a 24-21 lead.

Week 8: Bolles 24, Raines 21 (Oct. 19)

JACKSONVILLE-With star wide receiver Austin Kirksey sidelined with a separated shoulder, Bolles needed someone else to step up and fill his shoes.

A squib kick, which gave Raines possession at midfield with 3.3 seconds left, set up one last Hail Mary play.

Vikings quarterback Marvin Zanders alluded two defenders and threw a pass well short of the end zone at the 20 before being knocked down by cornerback Cody Boswell; setting off a wild celebration on the field by
Bolles players and students whom stormed the field.

The two minute comeback nearly didn’t happen.

Faced with fourth and seven with under a minute left, Carter broke free of the Vikings secondary and hauled in a 45-yard pass setting up the Bulldogs inside the ten yard line.

A pass interference call on Nigel Tribune, set the Bulldogs up inside the five. Two incomplete passes wound the clock under ten seconds.

Carter’s heroics were needed after seeing Bolles 17-14 lead with six minutes left evaporate with a Vikings clutch drive.

From their own 14, Zanders led his team down the field on a 10-play drive which resulted in an Alex Gardner 11-yard touchdown run up the middle putting the Vikings ahead 21-17 with 2:02 left.

Bolles took advantage of two costly Raines turnovers in the second half and converted both of them for scores.

After the Bulldogs tied the game at 7-7 following an Arterrious Mitchell 1-yard run late in the third quarter, Raines put together another potential scoring drive.

Three plays after the Mitchell score, Zanders hit Calvin Holmes for a 37-yard gain and Carlos Tarrats for a 24-yard gain on back-to-back plays setting the Vikings up inside the four yard line.

Zanders and tailback Keith Stallings fumbled the ball on the exchange giving the Bulldogs the ball at the nine yard line with 3:14 left in the third quarter.

Behind Peters (8 of 22 for 138 yards) and fullback/kicker Gianluca Heatherly (95 yards on 17 carries), the Bulldogs capitalized on the turnover driving the length of the field before settling for a Heatherly 24-yard field goal, giving the Bulldogs an 10-7 lead a minute into the fourth quarter.

Carter’s 25-yard completion on third and 18 helped set up the field goal.

Raines answered quickly though two plays later as Zanders connected with a wide open Tarrats at the 40-yard line and Tarrats ( 4 catches for 106 yards) outraced the Bulldog secondary 76-yards for a 14-10 lead.

Clinging to a 14-10 lead with under seven minutes left, Raines defense held the Bulldogs in check forcing another punt giving them a chance to run off clock.

Two plays later, a deflected Zanders pass at the line of scrimmage fell into the hands of lineman Greg Rogowski at the 29-yard line setting up the Bulldogs go ahead score.

Heatherly 6-yard run three plays later, gave Bolles a 17-14 lead with 5:36 left in the game.

The second half scoring outburst was quite opposite of the stalemate first half, which saw Bolles account for just 31 total yards yet trailed only by seven.

A scoreless first half tie was broken in the final minute of the first half, after the Vikings switched to a no huddle two minute fast break offense.

Zanders (17 of 20 for 285 yards) hit a wide open Jamal Dozier for a 10-yard score giving the Vikings a 7-0 halftime lead.

Two miss field goals from Heatherly kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard also in the first half.

Bolles (7-1, 2-0) can wrap up the 3-4A title in two weeks when they travel to Andrew Jackson, while Raines (6-1, 1-1) can wrap up the 3-4A runner-up spot Nov. 3 at home against arch-rival Ribault.

Week 7: Bradford 28, Keystone 21 (Oct. 12)

STARKE-On paper it clearly looked like a mismatch, one defense was giving up an average of 3.5 points a game, had given up only 19 points and posted three shutouts; while the other entered the game on the heels of a 41-0 blowout loss to state power South Sumter last week and had also lost 6 of their last 8 games to its arch-rival.

It didn’t matter though, as host Bradford County (4-2, 2-1) held off arch-rival Keystone Heights (5-2, 3-1) 28-21 at David Hurse Stadium to seize control of the District 4-5A runner-up spot.

Bradford stunned the Indians early on their second possession of the game on Lyndell Hampton’s (92 yards on 15 carries) 5-yard touchdown run giving the Tornadoes an early 7-0 lead with 4:48 left in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, the Tornadoes struck again thanks to a 24-yard scramble from sophomore quarterback Jacob Luke, which set up Jarvis Desue’s 2-yard touchdown run giving the Tornadoes a 13-0 lead with 9:09 left till half.

Just before half, Indian quarterback Blake Valenzuela tried to allude Tornadoes defenders and inadveredly threw the ball in the air to avoid the sack, and right into the hands of defensive lineman Markell Parks hands. Parks rumbled 20-yards down the right sideline for an untouched score and 20-0 lead with 1:05 left till half.

Despite being ahead three scores, Bradford coaches knew Keystone wouldn’t give up and go away, especially with a potential playoff spot on the line and they didn’t.

In the span of 91 seconds, the Indians made it a game again and cut the lead to one score 20-14 midway early in the third quarter.

Receiving the second half kickoff, the Indians didn’t waste any time making things interesting.

Senior tailback Alex Gonzales, who was contained for most of the night, broke freer for a 54-yard touchdown run down the left side of the field cutting the lead to 20-7 just two minutes into the second half.

Three plays later, Luke threw right into the hands of Indians linebacker John Brown, who returned the interception 42 yards down to the 1-yard line before being pushed out of bounds.

Michael Carroll’s 1-yard plunge cut the lead 20-14 with 8:23 left in the third quarter.

With the momentum having swung back to Keystone, Bradford needed a drive to seize back the game.

Luke (12 of 21 for 151 yards) orchestrated a 71-yard, 15 play drive on the ensuing drive resulting in a fourth and nine pass play to Kenny Dinkins for a 15-yard touchdown putting the Tornadoes back ahead 28-14 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter.

Behind Gonzales (168 yards on 23 carries), the Indians appeared to be headed towards another score. Gonzales carried the ball nine consecutive times on the drive before coming out for a breather. With Gonzales on the sideline, the offense stalled gaining negative 5 yards.

Facing fourth and 15, Valenzuela’s pass was nearly picked off at the 1-yard line giving the ball back to the Tornadoes with six minutes left in the game.

Just when it appeared Bradford would run the clock out potentially, wide receiver Marco Grimsley was stripped twice of the ball on back-to-back drives giving the ball back to the Indians at midfield.

Keystone took advantage of the second turnover by Grimsely. Three plays later Valenzuela found Brighton Gibbs for an 11-yard completion cutting the lead to 28-21 with 1:21 left in the game.

Keystone attempted an onside kick, which was recovered by Dequan Blount at midfield to end the Indians comeback attempt and the Indians run of 6 out of 8 wins over their arch-rivals.

With the win, Bradford (4-2, 2-1) remained in contention for the 4-5A runner-up spot ahead of Keystone (5-2, 3-1) thanks to the head-to-head win.

Bradford controls its own playoff destiny having to only win out to lock up the district runner-up spot, while Keystone, which host South Sumter in two weeks, must either pull the upset over South Sumter or have Bradford drop one of its final district games to potentially force a district shootout.
