Week Zero: Trinity 46, Good Pasture 3 (Aug. 24)

LOUISVILLE-Sitting on 199 career wins, longtime Trinity Christian head coach Verlon Dorminey didn't have to wait long to earn win No. 200.

While most teams were playing kickoff classics, Trinity opened its season hammering Goodpasture Christian (Tenn) 46-3 on Saturday afternoon at Papa John's Stadium.
Dorminey, who is in 22nd season at Trinity, became the fourth active coach on the First Coast area with 200 wins.

“You’re always thankful [for a win],” he said. “I try not to think about [the win total]. What it really just brought back was all the kids who have helped us be so successful over the years. That’s what’s fun. That’s what you remember," Dorminey told the Times Union.

Trinity (1-0) was sharp against the Cougars (0-2), a three-time state champion from Madison, Tennessee.

Isaiah Ford scored three touchdowns, two on passes from Oshay Carter and the other on a punt return.

Florida commitment Nick Washington added a 70-yard touchdown run and tacked on another score from just inside the 10. Jeffrey Holland and Phillip Williams also added rushing touchdowns for the Conquerors.

Trinity’s defense held on the Cougars' best drive of the game, an eight-minute trek that went inside the Conquerors' 20. They limited Goodpasture to a field goal. Trinity pulled away quickly after that, building a 20-3 lead by halftime and cruising to the finish.
