Week 6: Columbia 52, Ridgeview 17 (Oct. 5)

LAKE CITY-Things literally started off on the wrong foot for Ridgeview and only got worse in their District 3-6A showdown with host Columbia.

Having left the school at three o’clock, a normal hour drive turned into a five plus hour drive postponing kickoff until 8:51 p.m.

The Panthers showed up an hour late for the game after their bus overheated and got lost during a 40 car pileup on I-10 between Chafee and Baldwin.

It may have been better if they had not shown up as Columbia scored on its first three possessions enroute to a 52-17 win.

Out of a no huddle offense, Ridgeview showed no signs of lethargy early on driving 90 yards on the game’s opening possession before settling for a Josh Moore 44-yard field goal giving the Panthers an early 3-0 lead six minutes into the game.

From there on though it was all Columbia, as the Tigers (5-1, 2-0) took two plays to answer and take control of the game.

Ronald Timmons (255 yards on 14 carries) scored the first of his three touchdowns on the night on a 71-yard run following the score giving the Tigers a 7-3 lead a minute later.

A fake punt  pass led to another Tiger score as Jayce Barber snuck in from 2-yards and then hit Alex Webber for a 32-yard pass in the right corner of the end zone increased the lead to 21-3 with 7:27 left in the third quarter.

Being down 21-0 last week early to Bishop Kenny and coming from behind to win a shootout, you knew Ridgeview wouldn’t go down easily, but not tonight.

Moore (51 yards on 21 carries, 14 of 22 for 109 passing) snuck in from a yard with under two minutes left in the first half to cut the lead to 21-10 at the half.

Receiving the second half kickoff, the Tigers marched down the field methodically thanks to Timmons and Braxton Stockton (86 yards on 9 carries).

Timmons 13-yard run down the right sideline increased the lead to 28-10 with 7:52 left in the third quarter.

Ridgeview (5-1, 1-1) tried to remain in the game behind Marquez Cobb 52-yard touchdown run cutting the lead to 28-17 three minutes left in the quarter.

However, the Tigers answered on Stockton’s 46-yard touchdown down the right side line on the last play of the quarter giving the Tigers a 35-17 lead.

Columbia, which ended the Panthers run of two wins in a row and four of the last five in the series,  might have delivered a payback message with two late scores.

With under five minutes to play, Timmons tacked on a 50-yard touchdown run on his final carry of the night.

Darren Burch 3-yard touchdown run with 4.1 seconds left around 11:20 p.m. capped the scoring and 52-17 win for the Tigers.

Ridgeview is idle next week before returning to district play the following week with Oakleaf, while Columbia is also off and travels to Middleburg the following week.
