No. 21 Providence Stallions

2009 Record: 9-2

The Coach: Paul Petterson

The Players: Matt Santos (Sr., DB/RB), Jaleel Green (Soph., WR/DB), Cameron Davis (Sr., RB/WR), Jimmy Von Thron (Sr., DB), Bennett Blanton (Jr., K/P), Kory Williams (Jr., RB/DB), Isaiah Bruce (Sr., LB/RB), Jonathan Watt (Sr., LB), Christian Dicks (Jr., RB/WR), John Marshall (Sr., DB), Paul Axtell Jr. (Sr., OL/DL), Will Barefield II (Jr., DL)

The Word: Former Bolles assistant coach Paul Peterson has built a solid program at Providence, guiding the Stallions to a 17-4 record the last two years. This season shouldn’t be any different either as Petterson is loaded again with players like Green, Williams, Bruce and Dicks. The only hole Peterson needed to fill in the spring was finding a replacement for quarterback Kade Bell, who transferred to Fletcher after the season ended. The Stallions took NFC to the wire last season losing 14-7 in a game that settled the district runner-up spot. There is no reason to think the Stallions won’t be able to push both NFC and Trinity Christian again for a playoff spot.

No. 22 Suwannee Bulldogs

2009 Record: 4-6

The Coach: Willie Spears

The Players: Andre Zanders (Sr., WR/DE), Tre Robinson (Sr., DT), Jimmy Taylor (So., QB), Alex Falleck (Sr., LB), Greg Swinson (Sr., RB), Marcus Lane (Jr., DE)

The Outlook: Spears takes over after reviving a dormant Jefferson County program, in which he led them to a district title and second round playoff appearance. Zanders, Swinson and Taylor will lead the offense while Robinson, Falleck and Lane will take charge of the defense. Spears made an emphasis to tell the team in the spring, 4-6 is acceptable at Suwannee, will see if they get the message.

No. 23 Palatka Panthers

2009 Record: 0-10

The Coach: Kyle Rice

The Players: Lavarius McCullough (Sr., QB), Donte Roberts (Jr., QB), Stephen Eader (Sr., LB), Ricky Gibbs (Sr., LB)

The Word: What a first year for former Lincoln coach Kyle Rice. From a state runner-up finish at Lincoln to a winless season at Palatka. As if that wasn’t enough, Rice also has to deal with the loss of his quarterback JD Kaymore to graduation, his tailback Kion Williams transferred to nearby Interlachen and saw his tightend AC Leonard, a Florida commit, transfer.

No. 24 Pedro Menendez Falcons

2009 Record: 5-5

The Coach: Keith Cromwell

The Players: Tony Steward (Sr., LB), Ryan Bryson (Sr., DE), Zach Brown (Sr., QB), JD Stalvey (Sr., DE/LB), Levi Fairbanks (Sr., DT/OL), Steven Packo (Sr., DL), Fred Whitehead (Jr., RB)

The Word: Tony Steward stock went to astronomical heights over the summer, being named the No. 2 player in the country by Rivals.com Steward, who holds more than 31 offers, hopes to lead his team to their first ever playoff berth before deciding which college to attend. Brown (1051 yards, 9 TDs) is back to lead the offense while Steward and Stalvey man the defense.

No. 25 Wolfson Wolfpack

2009 Record: 2-8

The Coach: Greg Meyer

The Players: Darrin McPherson (Sr., WB/SS), Evan Cisero (Sr., LB/CB), Jasper Sasser (Soph., WR), Lonnie Jones (Soph., DT), Keaton Parker (Sr., OL/DT), Taurus Simmons (Sr., DE/TE)

The Word: Former Tampa Plant assistant coach Greg Meyer takes over the Wolfson job and hopes to take some of the winning with him. Meyer will have his hands full with a Wolfpack team that hasn’t been playoff bound in nearly a decade.

No. 26 Mandarin Mustangs

2009 Record: 3-7

The Coach: Robert Dean

The Word: To say it’s been a difficult two year period at Mandarin would be an understatement. A month before the 2007 season was to start, longtime coach JD Hall shockingly passed away. His replacement Jason Robinson was brought in 2008 from Orlando Olympia and had to deal with another blow when tailback Jarell Stewart drowned a few weeks into the 2009 season. This past summer, Robinson was fired a week before the spring game after sending explicit photos to his girlfriend over the cell phone. A week later, after the Mustangs were beat 26-0 to Ponte Vedra in the spring game, several players transferred out of the program.

No. 27 Forrest Rebels

2009 Record: 3-7

The Coach: Dennis Clemmons

The Players: Jarvis Guthrie (Sr., TE/DE), Jake Englishbee (Jr., K)

The Word: Longtime coach Dennis Clemmons must replace most of his offensive line and defensive line and his go-to-guy athlete Robert Brown. For the Rebels to get back to winning they must be able to finish games and be competitive in them as five of seven losses were blowouts by at least 18 points.

No. 28 Terry Parker Braves

2009 Record: 0-10

The Coach: Randy Glass

The Word: The roller coaster program continues to go up and down going from 7-3 two years ago to winless last season. Parker forced out veteran coach Jim Scible due to the economy and brought in former Lee coach Randy Glass. The program that has provided stepping stone for players like Tavadius Glenn (Miami) and Sam Barrington (South Florida) should have more to come.

No. 29 Creekside Knights

2009 Record: 5-5

The Coach: Greg Stanton

The Players: Dylan Sanders (Sr., RB), Josh Isacco (Jr., QB/RB), Adam Sandin (Soph., QB), Zach Higbea (Sr., WR), Darius Williams (Sr., DB), Deon Phillips (Jr., LB)

The Word: Beginning their third season of the program, Creekside now has the disadvantage of saying goodbye to several seniors from the first graduating class. Stanton must replace several starters on both sides of the ball including two year starting quarterback Kevin Payment (1421 yards, 13 TDs). Sanders looked impressive in the spring in a jamboree as did Sandin but Stanton was clear that nothing was decided in the spring and things could change in the fall.

No. 30 Ridgeview Panthers

2009 Record: 2-8

The Coach: Tom McPherson

The Players: Anthony Terry (Sr., RB), Darius Dorners (Jr., DL),

The Word: McPherson begins his tenth season at Ridgeview and again looks to be rebuilding the team with holes on both sides. Ridgeview will look to several inexperienced players on both sides of the ball to get them back to winning consistently.

No. 30 Bradford County Tornadoes

2009 Record: 4-6

The Coach: Derek Chipoletti

The Players: Tramaine Harris (Sr., WR/DB), Adrian Mosley (Sr., WR/DB), John Clark (Sr., QB/LB), Justin McBride (So., OL/DL)

The Outlook:  After a brief one year stint at Williston, Chipoletti moved closer to home to take over the Bradford job, along with the move, his father takes over the Athletic Director job.  Harris and Mosley will provide Tornadoe fans plenty of excitement.

No. 31 Hamilton County Trojans

2009 Record: 1-9

The Coach: Mike Pittman

The Players: Deonte Simmons (Sr., QB), Gerald Bristol (Sr., WR), Anthony Ingram (Sr., RB), Anthony Turner (Sr., FB), LA Willis (Sr., WR/DB), William Hill (Sr., ATH)

The Outlook: Not many teams can becoming off a 1-9 season and have high expectations the following year but the Trojans are loaded on both sides of the ball. Simmons emerged in the spring as the starter and will have several weapons to choose from including Ingram, Turner, Willis and Hill.

No. 32 Fort White Indians

2009 Record: 4-5

The Coach: Demetric Jackson

The Players: Alex Blake (Sr., WR), Jonathan Dupree (Sr., DL), Zach Bentley (Sr., OL), Leonard Dixon (Sr., RB)

The Outlook: Three-year starting quarterback Alex Gilmer is gone and Jackson spent the entire spring rotating two guys to fill the role. Blake is a game changer and will carry the team.

No. 33 Yulee Hornets

2009 Record: 7-4

The Coach: Bobby Ramsay

The Players: Derrick Henry (So., RB/LB), Kevin Rainey (Jr., TE), Connor Petty (Sr., QB), Derrick Peterson (Sr., WR), Antario Rainey (Sr., WR/DB), Jeremy Deberry (Sr., DE), Jake Green (Sr., DB), Chris Rumsey (Sr., WR), Kenny Stewart (Sr., OL), Abe Gingery (Sr., OL), Jose Guilarte (Sr., OL)

The Word: Derrick Henry came out on nowhere to lead the area in rushing as a freshman with 2480 yards and 22 touchdowns, including two 300-yard plus games. Through 11 games only two teams (Bolles, West Nassau) held Henry out of the end zone. The good news is Ramsay won’t have to rely just on Henry on offense as the Hornets return explosive players Kevin Rainey, Petty, Peterson and Antario Rainey. The offense may have to outscore teams as the Hornets must replace as many as eight defensive starters.

No. 34 Lafayette Hornets

2009 Record: 7-4

The Coach: Joey Pearson

The Players: Antwan Brown (Sr., ATH), Mel Jones (Jr., OL), Andre Hall (Sr., ATH), Dylan Harrelson (Sr., ATH)

The Outlook: Replacing three-year starting quarterback Nick Bracwell (FIU) is big shoes to fill but Pearson is getting more confident with his replacement. Brown will be the featured weapon on both sides of the ball and will carry the team.

No. 35 West Nassau Warriors

2009 Record: 8-3

The Coach: George Nelson

The Players: Christian Copher (Sr., RB/DB), Konnor Thomas (Sr., RB/DB), Trevor Velez (Sr., QB/DB), DeAnte Simmons (Jr., QB), Seth Velez (Sr., WR/QB), Earl Youman (Sr., RB/DB)

The Word: West Nassau came out of nowhere to steal the runner-up sport away from Episcopal and Yulee. Head coach George Nelson looks to keep that winning momentum going but will have to do so without tailback Garrett Hammett (1,872 yards, 24 TDs). The Warriors have plenty of weapons on offense but must rebuild a stellar defense.

No. 37 Middleburg Broncos

2009 Record: 3-7

The Coach: Robbie Justino

The Players: Corey Williams (Jr., RB), Desmond Sullivan (Jr., TE), Mike Williams (Sr., OL), Kris Boatright (Sr., LB), Corey Armont (Sr., DE)

The Word: Over the last two years, Justino has brought in former Bronco players as assistant coaches perhaps to rub off some of their success. Losing do everything athlete Austin Sweat over the summer to nearby Clay was a shock, for Justino's sake hopefully someone else will step up and fill his shoes.

No. 38 Crescent City Raiders

2009 Record: 8-3

The Coach: Quintin Lewis

The Word: Longtime coach Al Wisnoski retired turning the program over to longtime assistant coach Quintin Lewis. Lewis must replace big time athletes Andre Addison and Brian Baker lost to graduation. Luckily for him, there is usually not a shortage of athletes in Crescent City and he should be able to keep the program going in the right direction.

No. 40 Hilliard Flashes

2009 Record: 5-4

The Coach: Paul Whittenburg

The Players: Marcus Allen (QB), Josh Connor (RB), Antwan Moore (RB), Devron Whigham (HB), Jay Farris (RB/DB), Jason Ray (ATH), Ian Spencer (QB), Matt Johnson (DB)

The Word: The move to 5-1A was tough having to compete against Chiefland, Dixie County, Hamilton County, Trenton, Villages and Wildwood. The Flashes showed signs of excellence at times and ended their season on a three game winning streak.

No. 39 Keystone Heights Indians

2009 Record: 5-5

The Coach: Chuck Dickinson

The Players: Ryan Latner (Sr., WR/CB), Brantley Lott (Sr., QB/LB), R.J. Buxton (Jr., QB/DE), Reginald Thomas (Sr., RB/CB), Chase Julius (Jr., CB/WR), Zack Lambert (TB/DB), Tyler Jolley (Sr., OL/DL), Robert Johnson (Sr., LB/OL), Nick Verschaeve (Jr., DL/OL)

The Word: Chuck Dickinson begins his twelfth season at Keystone and has his sights on getting back to the playoffs again. Offensively, the Indians should be potent with the return of Latner (25.0 ypc), Lott, Buxton and Thomas. Defensively, the Indians will need to fill some holes but do have some experience with Johnson, Verschaeve and Julius.

No. 36 Mandarin Christian Eagles

Mandarin Christian Eagles

2009 Record: 6-4

The Coach: Dennis Thompson

The Players: O’shay Carter (Soph., QB/DE), Tyrese Gamble (Sr., OL/DL), Travis Makausas (Sr.,, WR/DB), Vincent Stipper (Jr., OL/DL), Eric Durham (Sr., DB), Trey Tiechdon (Sr., WR), Colby Wilkens (Sr., DL), Jimmy Carter (Sr., DL), Drew Harden (Soph., LB)

The Word: Second year coach Dennis Thompson has the Eagles fifth year program heading in the right direction and confident he can compete with Hawthorne and Lafayette for a potential playoff spot. In his first season, Thompson guided the Eagles to their first winning season and a Big 10 Conference Divisional title. Thompson’s west coast spread offense must replace four year starter Josh Tylski, but won’t miss a beat with the addition of Arlington Country Day transfer two-year starter O’shay Carter. Carter is one of several ACD transfers including Gamble and Makausas, who averaged 40 yards a catch last season.

No. 41 Eagle's View Warriors

Eagle’s View Warriors

2009 Record: 7-3

The Coach: Ryan Keith

The Players: Rashod Byers (Sr., ATH), Tre Rainey (Sr., WR), Tevin Stewart (Sr., WR/DB), Bial Kemp (Sr., LB), Cody Chambers (Sr., DB)

The Word: The move up in class from 1B drew mixed reactions finishing 2-2 in the district, not to mention nearly upsetting 2B power North Florida Christian. Keith will have big shoes to fill with the loss of athlete Frantanzy Bryant and quarterback Austin Morris, Rashod Byers and Tre Rainey are back and will be two of the most sought after players.

No. 42 Episcopal Eagles

Episcopal Eagles

2009 Record: 6-4

The Coach: David Hess

The Word: After a season opening loss to Trinity Christian, Episcopal rolled off six consecutive wins on its way to a possible playoff spot. Unfortunately, the Eagles ran into Bolles which set them off into a three game losing streak to end their playoff hopes. A showdown with West Nassau in Week 9 was for the runner-up berth but the Eagles fell short.

The Players: Caleb Anderson (Sr., RB/DB), Nick Smith (Jr., DB/WR), Gunnar Cox (Soph., LB/FB), Oreion Cobbs (Sr., RB/DB), Caleb Hill (Sr., QB/FS), Diavontay Wiggins (Jr., RB/LB)

The Word: University Christian has plenty of athletes to chose from, what will determine their fate is finding solid lineman. UC has been a consistent playoff contender since the 1980’s and could find themselves in the mix again this season.

No. 44 Fernandina Beach Pirates

Fernandina Beach Pirates

2009 Record: 2-8

The Coach: Ed Brown

The Word: Two steps forward, two steps back seems to summarize the Fernandina Beach program. A winless season in 2006 was followed by a playoff run in 2007, a 6-4 season in 2008 was follow by a 2-8 season last season. Brown will have his hands full again losing both Tahj Kimble and Tairhon Alford not to mention having to fight Bolles, Episcopal, West Nassau and Yulee for the two playoff spots.

The Players: John Neloms (Jr., DB, WR), James Johnston (Sr., RB/DB), Travis Ballard (Sr., RB/DB/WR), Brandon Garland (Sr., RB/DB), Jerame Harris (RB/DB), Dan Taylor (Sr., LB/FB), Austin Wheatley (Sr.LB/TE)

The Word: Harrison must replace several holes on all three phases of the game, but should have enough weapons to compete for another Big Ten Conference Divisional title. Priority one was finding a replacement for quarterback Garrett Naughton, which will be either Andrew Neswiacheny or Luke Liedman. Offensively the Cardinals will be led by Johnston, Ballard Garland and Harris. Neloms is a force on defense having picked off four passes, including two of them for touchdowns.

The Word: Not since the 1970's has Branford football been this good. The independent Bucs are going for their fourth consecutive winning season and came within one win over Bishop Snyder last season from winning the Big Ten Conference. Wiles must replace his go to guy John Perry, whom is heading to Tusculum University.

No. 47 Englewood Rams

2009 Record: 3-7

The Coach: Theo Denson

The Word: When Englewood and Paxon met in Week 7 many called it the Winless Bowl as both teams entered the game winless. Englewood held off the Eagles 45-42 to stop a 17 game losing streak and propelled that into a three game winning streak. The Rams look to carry that momentum over into this season. Replacing quarterback Chris Lampley (2,150 yards, 24 TD’s) and wide receiver Andrew Faulk (1280 yards, 13 TD’s) won’t be easy either.

The Word: Fleming Island assistant coach Frank Andrea Jr. becomes the eighth coach since 1999. Andrea must replace several key players including tailback Scott Jones (RB/DB), quarterback Kevin Engmann (1277 yards, 17 TD’s) and kicker Cairo Santos (Tulane), one of five players who signed on national signing day. Spring was a challenge with just 18 players out, meaning Andrea must hit the hallways to find more depth.

2009 Record: 6-4

The Coach: Lashawn Highsmith

The Word: The roller coaster saga at ACD continues to get interesting and not disappoint. Longtime coach James Sims left to take the Hawthorne job, with him leaving several of his players left and enrolled at Mandarin Christian. The Apaches hired former Bolles assistant coach Stan Wrubluwski but he resigned the first day of spring practice. An assistant coach was named interim coach but he two resigned and the Apaches were forced to close down spring practice. One of Smith’s assistant coach Lashawn Highsmith was named the new coach in June and will take over a program in financial and athletic shambles, despite making the playoffs three of the last four years.

The Players: Sean Bowles (Sr., QB), Daniel McCarthy (Jr., RB), Victor Fetchero (Jr., WR), Antonee Lilliard (Sr., WR), Connor Vansandt (Sr., WR)

The Word: St. Johns Country Day continues to build its young program unfortunately for Merlin Smith, the student body isn’t giving him much to work with. Two years ago the Spartans barely had 22 players out, while this spring they played with 17.

Peniel Baptist Crusaders

2009 Record: 5-5

The Coach: Marcos Bosque

The Word: Year one was a learning experience for the Crusaders under first year coach Marcos Bosque, who previously was an assistant at University Christian. On the field the Crusaders were 4-3, as three other games were won or loss via forfeits. Offensively, the Crusaders were solid scoring at least 36 points three times including a season high 58 in a win over Cedar Creek; however defensively the Crusaders gave up 40 or more points in four games. Good news for Bosque is that he returns nearly all of his players and can continue to build the program. Bosque only had 13 players out for the spring and it showed in a 20-0 loss to Florida Deaf.

The Coach: Steve Shields

The Players: Austin Kennedy (Jr., QB/DB), Taylor Hogan (Sr., OL/LB), Zaybreion Gunter (Jr., RB/DB), Eric Maddox (Sr., RB/DB)

The Word: Defensive Coordinator Steve Shields was named interim coach after Andy Giddens resigned in June to pursue his Masters Degree. The move up to Class 2A hasn’t been kind so far being placed in a district with Raines, Ribault, Santa Fe, Suwannee and Baker County. The wing-T offense is led by Kennedy (708 passing yards) and Gunter (463 rushing yards). Hogan a versatile two-way standout leads the defense.

The Players: Sam Wood (Sr., QB), Karim Harris (Sr., WR/CB), Ricky Floyd (Sr., WR/DB), Geoff Fin (Sr., K/P), Wayne Moyer (Sr., DB), Xzavier Griffin (Sr., DB)

The Word: Former Parker assistant coach Joe Sigfried takes over the program after former coach and athletic director Kelly Blount left to take the inaugural Atlantic Coast job. Like every previous coach there, Sigfried battles a consistent problem of its players having to maintain high academic standards. The move to independent hasn’t gone as easy as it should either.

The Word: Former Jackson coach Kevin Sullivan was brought in to start the inaugural program at Atlantic Coast. Sullivan inherits underclassmen mostly from Sandalwood and Mandarin, with a few from Wolfson, Englewood and Parker. Atlantic Coast could easily finish with a winning season as they play a handful of first year programs like Oakleaf and University (Deland) along with small schools like Mandarin Christian, University Christian and Father Lopez in addition to scheduling neighboring feeder bigger schools Fletcher, Parker and Sandalwood.

Bullock will have his hands full no doubt starting a program from scratch that will take kids from Orange Park, Ridgeview and Middleburg. The schedule is set up nice with two games against first year Atlantic Coast and one against first-year University (Deland), along with games against Hilliard, Matanzas, Palatka, Hawthorne and Fleming Island. The Coach: Willie Offord

The Players: Brett Smith (Sr., QB), Erik Clemons (Sr., WR), Javon Porter (Jr., OL/DL), Maurice Simon (Sr., RB/DB), D.J. Lawrence (Sr., DB/RB)

The Word: Interlachen ended a 24 game losing streak with a win over Pierson Taylor last season in Week 6 and looks to build on that despite a current five game losing streak. The Rams have been one of the worst programs in the state going 11-68 over the last eight years, including a 38 game losing streak form 1998-2001. No. 58 Florida Deaf Dragons

Florida Deaf Dragons

2009 Record: 0-9

The Coach: Johnny Samuels

The Word: Another winless season pushed the Dragons losing streak to 20 games. The goal is quite simple win and stop the streak. Florida Deaf should be better on defense with the return of eight starters.

No. 59 Cedar Creek Christian Soldiers

To get us through the rest of the summer, I will rank all the teams in my viewing area (Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Duval, Hamilton, Lafayette, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns and Suwannee counties) a total of 60 schools.

No. 59 Cedar Creek Christian Soliders

Head Coach: Randy Howell (fourth season)

2009 Record: N/A

Last time in playoffs: None

Key returners: Scott Armstrong (Sr., LB/QB/RB), Brandon Hodges (So., LB), Hezekiah Lucas (Jr., QB/DE), Domique Davis (Sr., CB/WR)

News: Howell’s west coast offense has fared better showing steady improvement as the Soldiers put up points and even managed a 50-12 win over Lake Wales Vanguard. Three years ago in the inaugural season, the Soldiers were shut out five of their six games and was outscored 269-6. After two years of playing in the independent league, the Soldiers made the move last season to district play joining 1B and were pounded by every team. Howell made the move in the off-season to go back to independent play, a smart move.
